Gnome Shows Black Screen
Missing dbus-x11 Package
You might not have dbus-x11
package installed.
sudo apt-get install dbus-x11
Running as Root
Some cloud providers, such as Vultr and Digital Ocean, provide you with root credentials. Gnome needs to run as a normal user. Furthermore, you must log into the system as a normal non-root user. This is because systemd
creates a directory and sets $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR
on login. Thus, for Gnome to work, you need to ssh to the system as a non-root user and then run vncserver
.
You can identify this problem by the following error message: “dbus[55223]: Unable to set up transient service directory: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR “/run/user/0” is owned by uid 0, not our uid 1001”
